WHAT IS CHURCH MEMBERSHIP?
What is the Christian Church? A church is much more than a building. It is a group of believers who gather together regularly and are committed to one another. (Heb. 10:25). Fellowship, worship, and ministry are all conducted by people, not buildings. God said of the church, “I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (2 Cor. 6:16; Heb. 8:10.)
Believers Are Called to Become Church Members. To become a member of a church is to formally commit to a local body of believers. The idea of salvation without belonging to a local church is not biblical. Christians should not live in isolation. From the beginning, when individuals repented and accepted Jesus, they were baptized and added to the church (Acts 2:41, 47; 5:14; 16:5.)
What Membership Means. Membership means joining together with other believers to serve, care, and build up each other as we devote ourselves to teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer (Acts 2:42.) It also means sharing the good news of a new life to those who are lost (Matt. 28:18-20). As the Apostle Paul wrote, “How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? (Rom. 10:14–15.)

BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP
1. Sense of Community. We provide members with a sense of community and acceptance. Deep friendships are made with others who have similar beliefs. These friendships can last for a lifetime and provide support during rough times. Personal connections can lower anxiety, relieve depression, heighten self-esteem, and increase longevity.
2. Volunteering. Membership provides opportunities for volunteering. It gives members a chance to learn new skills, meet new people, and make a difference in the lives of others. Opportunities include teaching children in Sunday School, joining a welcoming committee, supporting mission work, and much more. Not only does it provide satisfaction in meeting and assisting others, it brings a sense of accomplishment and pride.
3. Social Events. Membership also brings many opportunities to socialize with others. We hold events for our members. These events are fun and meaningful. They also offer chances to form friendships, build professional relationships, and strengthen connections with God.
4. Leadership Opportunities. Members are called to serve others. (1 Cor. 12.) Sometimes it involves leadership roles. We are to love one another, pray for one another, encourage one another, and build each other up. It often involves reaching out and caring for the faith and future of others. Members in leadership roles not only help others but experience a deeper appreciation for the gift God has given them.
