Importance of Baptism. Baptism does not save you—salvation comes by faith alone (Eph. 2:8-9). However, baptism is important because it is a public declaration that you are a follower of Jesus Christ. It is a public confession of your faith in, and commitment to, Jesus Christ. It is an act of faith and obedience to Christ. Baptism is also rich in symbolism.
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. (Rom. 6:4)
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (2 Cor. 5:17)
And this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also – not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. (1 Pet. 3:21)
Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven. (Acts 2:38)
