While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Matt. 26:26-28)
What It's Called. The celebration is called the Lord's Supper, Communion, Cup of Blessing, Breaking of Bread, and Eucharist. In Catholic churches, it's called Mass. All of these terms are acceptable. At Community Church, we call it Communion.
The Form Varies. Communion is celebrated in Christian churches around the world. The form varies--some use pieces of bread, some use wafers; some use wine, while others use grape juice. Each is acceptable. We use grape juice and unleavened bread.
Who Can Receive It. Those who accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior can receive Communion at our church regardless of their membership elsewhere.
The Purpose. We celebrate Communion on the first Sunday of each month to remember Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, to give thanks for his gift of salvation, to examine our hearts, and to commune with God and fellow believers.
