At the beginning of each new year, we celebrate 21 days of fasting. It is a partial fast based on the experience of the prophet Daniel. Each person picks one or more things to abstain from for 21 days. The person might abstain from sweets or meat or social media or television or solid foods or alcohol or one meal a day for the duration of the fast. It can be anything the person believes will help him/her focus their thoughts and prayers on a closer walk with God.
The fast is a spiritual discipline. It allows more time to hear the still small voice of the Holy Spirit. A person might ask God to help replace pride with humility, to be content in all circumstances, to be fully satisfied in Christ alone, and for a better understanding of God's direction in their life. Whatever the particular goal, a period of fasting will help us achieve it.
And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Matthew 6:16-18).
But he answered, "It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” (Matthew 4:4).
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31).
